Official founding ceremony.
1989
Selling of Jean's house in Wellington, New Zealand, to buy eight acres of land in Nilakottai, Tamil Nadu, South India.
1990
Drawing up of a 'Deed of Trust' with Jean Watson, Beth Drummond and Michael Harris as Trustees.
1991
Buying of the Illam building in Bypass Road, Tamil Nadu, South India, with money raised by the Trust.
1992
Publication of first edition of Jean's book 'Karunai Illam: The Story of an Orphanage'.
1993
The building of a compound wall.
1995
A visit from the Deputy High Commissioner of New Zealand.
1996
A new borewell is sunk in the Illam compound.
1998
The 10th aniversary.
The purchase of an auto-rickshaw.
1999
The building of a new kitchen and a new room above it.
2001

Three tertiary students graduate.
Publication of second edition of Jean's book 'Karunai Illam: The Story of an Orphanage'.

2002
Completion of the building of the girls' bathroom and big girls' sleeping and study room.

The purchase of land opposite to build the boys' hall with bathrooms and sleeping and study rooms. Building commenced.

2004
Completion of the building of the boys' hall.
2007
Partnership formed with the DHAN Foundation
2012
The Illam celebrates 25 years since their formation on 1987
2013
DHAN and KIT agree to commence construction of a new Illam building on the Garden Land
2014
Phase 1 of the construction of the new Illam building is well underway
