NZ visitors at the Illam!

Long term supporters Pavithra and Paul Devadatta from Wellington had a great visit to the Illam early January and in their own words: We arrived in Madurai on January 9th 2025.  The next morning, we called Anbu to confirm our visit that day.  During the course of the conversation, I asked what things the children might need.  By the end of the call, it became apparent that we needed to get to the wholesale market right away. Thanks to Google maps we found the place and stocked up on 150 sets of undies, 50 straw mats to sleep on, outdoor games equipment like football, throwball and the net, skipping ropes, some indoor games, fruit and snacks.  Each shop keeper was keen to know the reason for the bulk purchases and where it was going and so we spread the word about our great Illam and the good work of Jean Watson at which discounts were eagerly offered on our purchases. We grabbed a quick lunch in Madurai and arrived at the Illam by late afternoon.  Soon after, the children arrived in several auto-rickshaws after a busy day at school and it was so refreshing to see their gleaming faces so keen to welcome us.  They quickly washed up while we set up the nets and had a game of throwball together.  Some tried out the footballs and skipping ropes.  It was a joy to play with the children which took us back to our childhood.
After sweating it out on the playground we were summoned to the gate where the children and staff were gathered to formally welcome us.  We were presented with the Arathi - the traditional blessing on entry, garlands and beautifully painted welcome cards.  We were then ushered into the hall where we were introduced to each child who gave their name, class/year at school and their ambition in life. Their dreams for the future were very inspiring and a reflection of the positive and encouraging atmosphere they are growing up in.  We shared afternoon tea together, chatted, distributed the goodies to the very appreciative children and staff and said our goodbyes.  It was heartwarming to see some of the familiar children and staff I had met last year.  The grotto for Jean Watson with a larger image printed on ceramic was being prepared.  There was a new shed with cows for their milk supply.  Various garden projects were underway too and a large play area.  All in all, a great place to grow up in, simple, secure and wholesome.  Hopefully we'll have more time to spend at the Illam and get to know the children better on our next visit.
